How to read the F table

  1. Find your numerator degrees of freedom (df₁) across the top row.
  2. Find your denominator degrees of freedom (df₂) down the left column.
  3. The cell where they meet is the critical F-value at α = 0.05. Reject the null hypothesis if your F statistic is larger.

About the F-distribution

The F-distribution is the ratio of two scaled chi-square variables and is used in the analysis of variance (ANOVA) and to compare variances. It is right-skewed and depends on two separate degrees of freedom — one for the numerator and one for the denominator. This table lists the upper 5% critical values.
