How to read the z table

  1. Split your z-score into the tenths and hundredths — for example, 1.96 is 1.9 and 0.06.
  2. Find the row for the first two digits (1.9) and the column for the hundredths (0.06).
  3. The cell gives Φ(z), the probability that a standard normal value is less than or equal to z. For 1.96 this is 0.9750.

About the standard normal distribution

This table lists Φ(z) for non-negative z. Because the standard normal distribution is symmetric, the area for a negative z is 1 minus the value for its positive counterpart: Φ(−z) = 1 − Φ(z).

Frequently asked questions

What does the z table show?

It shows the cumulative probability Φ(z) — the area under the standard normal curve to the left of a given z-score, i.e. the probability that a standard normal random variable is at most z.

How do I find probabilities for a negative z-score?

Use the symmetry of the normal distribution: Φ(−z) = 1 − Φ(z). Look up the positive z-score and subtract the result from 1.
