Null hypothesis

The default claim of no effect or no difference.

The null hypothesis (H₀) is the statement a hypothesis test tries to disprove — typically that there is no effect, no difference, or no relationship. The alternative hypothesis (H₁) is what you conclude if the null is rejected.

A test never proves the null hypothesis; it either rejects it or fails to reject it based on the evidence.
