Standard deviation

The square root of the variance; spread in original units.

Standard deviation measures how far values typically fall from the mean, in the same units as the data. A small standard deviation means the data clusters tightly around the mean; a large one means it is more spread out.

For roughly normal data, about 68% of values fall within one standard deviation of the mean, 95% within two, and 99.7% within three.
